FAQ

Find Out What Our Clients Are Frequently Asking

Why do I need to have X-rays taken?

X-rays alert your dentist to important problems that can’t be seen. Without X-rays, only 50% of your tooth surface can be checked – cavities under fillings could lie undetected until it’s too late. We recommend screening Bitewings every 2 years and large OPGs (panoramic scans of both jaws) every 5 years.

I don’t like needles. Can I have gas for my treatment?

We have a few different ways to make your dental treatment more relaxing. Your dentist can discuss all available options with you.

What is the difference between amalgam and composite fillings?

Amalgam is a metal alloy including silver, small amounts of mercury and other metals. Composite is a plastic resin-based material. There are many factors to consider when selecting the filling material. Your dentist can discuss with you the most appropriate material for your situation.

When I get my teeth cleaned, will they be whiter?

The main benefit of cleaning is healthier gums. During the clean, your dentist will remove most of the surface stains on the teeth, such as cigarette stains. However, the internal colour of teeth is not changed. If you’d like even whiter teeth, take a look at our professional, affordable teeth whitening treatments.

Why do I need fluoride?

Fluoride strengthens the tooth surface and makes teeth less prone to cavities, especially when applied within 2 years of tooth eruption. Fluoride is a major part of modern preventive dentistry.

Why should I use an electric toothbrush?

Brushing your teeth keeps teeth and gums clean and healthy. Electric toothbrushes are scientifically proven to be more effective than manual brushes. Most feature timers to help you brush for the right amount of time, and sensors to stop you brushing too hard and wearing away teeth or causing gum recession.

Do I really need to floss my teeth?

Yes! Most dental disease is caused by a lack of flossing. Dentists find most tooth decay and gum disease occurs in between the teeth, as plaque builds up when patients fail to clean between the teeth. There are several different methods of interdental cleaning, so ask your dentist what is suitable for you.

Do I have to pay if I have private health insurance?

At Macquarie Dental, benefits are available to most private health insurance patients with extras or ancillary cover. Some private health insurance companies even offer ‘no-gap’ dental benefits. We recommend that patients check with their health funds about their entitlements prior to making an appointment.

Does Macquarie Dental offer a payment plan?

Dental loans can be arranged quickly with credit providers MacCredit. There’s no need to wait for important dental treatments – take advantage of flexible finance and low monthly repayments. Ask your dentist for details or take a look at our Payment Plans.

How much does treatment cost?

Dental services at Macquarie Dental are provided at average or below average costs for NSW. Please see our Affordable Dental Care section for price comparisons.
